Well, I am no longer a subscriber of Coast to Coast AM’s streamlink. I subscribed thinking that I would be able to keep up with the world’s most popular late night talk show, but I just don’t have the time for it. I don’t know if I did when I originally subscribed. I probably knew I didn’t.
For me, my subscription to Coast to Coast AM wasn’t just my interest in hearing about crazy topics including alien hybrids, ghosts, or other crazy conspiracy theories; I think it was really my attempt to capture my past road trip experiences through this familiar show. Two days after getting my driver’s license, I headed out on the road from Tennessee to California and had made similarly long road trips every summer thereafter. Even after graduating from Colgate I still managed to fit in a 12-16 hour drive back to my parents’ house for the holidays.
I no longer have the freedom – or money – to take such trips and I really miss it. It was during one of those long drives that I originally discovered Coast to Coast as I scanned the AM dial in search of something interesting to listen to and keep me awake. Paired with the open road and night sky, it just seemed like there were a million things out there waiting to be stumbled upon and even though I approached roadtrips with a “just get there” attitude, I enjoyed the entire experience whether it was a 12 hour journey up to NY or a 2400 mile across I-40 to California within 36 hours and only 30 minutes of sleep. The trips proved to be interesting tests of endurance and adventure. Okay, the only adventure was dealing with my own funk after a day or two of not showering – sleeping was optional and only took place in the cramped vehicle at rest areas.
Well I am happy you are done with coast to coast. It always gave me bizarro nightmares if I was listening before bed.
I myself have gotten into this habit around the holidays now that I hang my hat in TN. It starts slow, I think…10 hrs at a stint or 6, and then you’re driving 14 in a row to NY. It’s strange, but I like to do these trips by myself — gives me lots of time to think and to listen to whatever music I want.
I like short roadtrips alone, but I wouldn’t like sleeping in rest stops. That’s my (perhaps irrational) fear of being murdered by a serial killer at work there.
I too discovered Coast to Coast on a roadtrip and only recently rediscovered it (after 3 years+) while I was on my way from Anchorage to Kodiak. I fell asleep listening to it as I nursed a bottle of vodka and watched the sun not set… Sounds more romantic than it was. Still, I enjoyed myself and the vodka-and-alien-talkshow-induced dreams of abduction and battling evil alien overlords.
