Cross This One Off The List

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

Well not that there is actually a list to cross this place off of, but Yaeka is always talking about taking a car camping trip and doing some more day hikes, so it’s good to know that Belfair State Park is not the place to go.

Drowning in CDs

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Well I think that it must be CD season as I’m starting to feel a bit like I did back at WRCU. Granted at the station I was likely to have well over 50 if not 100 cds to go through at any time, but having a queue of over 20 CDs to review for the website is kind of crazy for me. I guess some of these could be viewed as “optional”, but I really want to be able to review every single CD that I receive in the mail. If you or someone you know is interested in reviewing CDs, please let me know.

Stuff On My Cat

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

While checking out today’s Rocketboom I became aware of the existence of the website Stuff On My Cat.

It’s kind of like sleeping person/drunk guy jenga that took place on New Year’s. (Scroll to the bottom)

Moving on Over

Tuesday, July 19th, 2005

Well thanks to a crazy deal over at Dreamhost that allowed for a purchase of one full year of hosting for under 10 bucks that included more bandwidth and disk space than my current host as well as a free domain registration, I’m finally going to be moving this blog over to phillramey.com in the somewhat near future.

After I get my personal blog moved over, this area will become more of a technology/music related blog. I’m planning on changing the whole front page of The PhiLL(er) to be somewhat more blog-like. I think this will allow for brief news tidbits and greater contribution from writers. At this point I’m also thinking that utilizing wordpress or some other blog interface may be the best way to get contributions from all the columnists that have now disappeared. Anyway, expect some moving around soon. I’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Myspace.com Stop Freaking Out

Tuesday, July 19th, 2005

So I finally got a myspace.com profile up for The PhiLL(er) over the past week or so and now that I’m finally getting into this whole “making friends” thing, I keep getting these stupid errors
!!!

What’s the deal?! For the most part, myspace has been the faster, better featured, and more stable version of Friendster so it sucks to see it getting all out of whack. Myspace does deserve major credit for their excellent music portion of their site. They’ve scored some major deals managing to be the exclusive place on the internet to stream Death Cab for Cuties new single.

Okay, rant over. Do I seem to be complaining a lot about online services lately?

I Saw a Goldfish or Something

Monday, July 18th, 2005

The title of this post came out of Flynn’s mouth after playing the “pass-out game” sophomore year. I hadn’t done it since my freshman year of high school, but I remember it being a rather surreal experience where I had a “dream” that it didn’t work and I went home.

Anyway, I was crusing Boing Boing when I came across this post Pass-Out Game really is bad news. So remember kids, don’t play the game by yourself! Seriously, that’s just not too smart, we didn’t even do it without extra people to hold you up after you passed out.

Cancellation

Tuesday, July 12th, 2005

Well, I am no longer a subscriber of Coast to Coast AM’s streamlink. I subscribed thinking that I would be able to keep up with the world’s most popular late night talk show, but I just don’t have the time for it. I don’t know if I did when I originally subscribed. I probably knew I didn’t.

For me, my subscription to Coast to Coast AM wasn’t just my interest in hearing about crazy topics including alien hybrids, ghosts, or other crazy conspiracy theories; I think it was really my attempt to capture my past road trip experiences through this familiar show. Two days after getting my driver’s license, I headed out on the road from Tennessee to California and had made similarly long road trips every summer thereafter. Even after graduating from Colgate I still managed to fit in a 12-16 hour drive back to my parents’ house for the holidays.

I no longer have the freedom – or money – to take such trips and I really miss it. It was during one of those long drives that I originally discovered Coast to Coast as I scanned the AM dial in search of something interesting to listen to and keep me awake. Paired with the open road and night sky, it just seemed like there were a million things out there waiting to be stumbled upon and even though I approached roadtrips with a “just get there” attitude, I enjoyed the entire experience whether it was a 12 hour journey up to NY or a 2400 mile across I-40 to California within 36 hours and only 30 minutes of sleep. The trips proved to be interesting tests of endurance and adventure. Okay, the only adventure was dealing with my own funk after a day or two of not showering – sleeping was optional and only took place in the cramped vehicle at rest areas.

No More Beef with Ourmedia.org

Monday, July 11th, 2005

I know that I had been complaining a lot in the past about ourmedia.org and how it was all buggy and stuff, but today I just realized that it is actually still in alpha and not even a beta test yet so that I should really just shut up. I should be happy that they were willing to open the alpha release to the public in the first place otherwise I wouldn’t even be doing a podcast due to a lack of bandwidth and space on my server.

I’ve found the new ourmedia publishing tool which is a little desktop application to upload your files to fix any odd file publishing problems I had had in the past. There was one weird thing this past weekend where I uploaded a file with it and it didn’t show up in my account, but you can usually still find the files through the internet archive if you do a good search. So anyway, I’m done complaining and realize that the services can only improve over time and that they are already performing a great service.

So what prompted all this positive ourmedia.org energy? Well it actually has to do with this entry I found on The Social Software Weblog discussing how Ourmedia was nominated as a finalist in the UN World Summit Awards. Seems as though they’re really starting to gain some positive attention in the world.

Touring the 50 States

Friday, July 8th, 2005

Through the podcasters mailing list, I found out about this guy, Webster McBride of a band called Golden Birds. Anyway, if you click on the link of his name, you’ll see that he’s out trying to perform at all 50 capitol cities in the US.

It seems like a pretty interesting goal, but I don’t think I’ll be able to make it down to Olympia as it’s on a Thursday. Maybe you can hit up his performance in you capitol city.

Total Opposite of Early Rising

Sunday, July 3rd, 2005

So I think my avoidance of the early rising experiment has caught up with me. Over the past week or two, whenever I quit trying, I decided to do more of the staying up as late as possible and waking up as late as possible (usually 6am) plan. Well it finally caugh up with me last night when I went to bed around 8pm and slept about 12 hours. I needed the sleep bad. Throughout the week my eyes felt itchy as if from allergies except really it was lack of sleep. You’d think with this sudden lack of sleep that I’d be a productive person, but far from it in case you couldn’t tell by the lack of blogging/review writing. I think I should give the early rising thing another try and I’ll start tomorrow night.
