The File Sharing Database

Saturday, July 31st, 2004

The owner of nuclearelephant.com has started a project to show positive impacts of filesharing by providing a database for people to log things that they have purchased (CD, DVD, software, etc) that they would not have purchased if they hadn’t checked it out first through filesharing. Add your submission to the database.

“WHERE THE FUCK ARE ALL THE BALLOONS?!”

Quick iTunes Answers

Monday, July 26th, 2004

The “Songs Not Yet Played” is a smart playlist set with songs played zero times (obviously). I haven’t played around with Yaeka’s iPod in a while, but I’m pretty sure all those playlists transfer over to the iPod. Also, the rating question is one Yaeka and I had back in Tacoma. I’m pretty sure we found that the ratings did transfer back to iTunes from the iPod, but further testing needs to be done to be sure.

Recent Acquisitions

Sunday, July 25th, 2004

Gary had asked what I have been listening to recently. Mainly I’ve just been trying to reduce the number of songs “Not Yet Played” in iTunes which is now at 2,422 which is a great number less than it was at a little over 2 weeks ago (about 3,500). Other than that I mainly just listen to whatever I should be reviewing and also KEXP the local independent station. You can check it out streaming online. They also have the past 2 weeks of shows archived as well.

Anyway, I ordered a bunch of shit from insound the other day so here’s a list of what I should be checking out soon.
Franz Ferdinand – Take Me Out (White Label 12″)
Sonic Youth – Sonic Nurse
The Fall – The Real New Fall LP (In LP format – Baby Blue Ltd Edition)
The Fiery Furnaces – Gallowsbird’s Bark
The Race – If You Can (will be reviewing soon)
Young People – The Single 12″

Also insound failed to mail some stuff so I don’t have the new Fiery Furnaces yet, but hopefully it’ll be here soon. It seems as though most of the stuff they played last fall in Seattle was stuff from the new album so I’m looking forward to it.

I know this isn’t a library but…

Saturday, July 17th, 2004

So Yaeka’s been gone since Tuesday visiting peeps in upstate NY and one of my latest ways to waste time has been to go to Barnes & Noble and get some coffee and browse around. Well let me tell you something, going to a Barnes & Noble located next to a movie theater is a bad idea. Fucking junior high kids running around all over the place being loud and obnoxious and stupid. It’s a bookstore. Go look at books. Please don’t wander around where I’m at talking about how cool those punk kids look and how hot they are and you know they’re the cool punk kids because they’re all in black and you’re all like “ooh, yummy”. Go hang out in the cafe or something. WHERE ARE YOU PARENTS?!!!

The New All Music

Saturday, July 17th, 2004

Have you checked out allmusic.com lately? They’ve finally given the site a long overdue facelift — I’m pretty sure the yellow look had been in place before I even started college in 1998. The new layout is nice in that it separates the information out in a more reasonable way. I always hated how in the old design you had to scroll all the way down and these tabs really help the functionality.

There’s also this registration thing going on now. I haven’t really figured out what addition things you get by registering, but I’m not really into that. Anyway, point is it’s about time this site got an update considering it is owned by the country’s largest onestop.

Another Great Software Deal

Monday, July 5th, 2004

Kevin Rose has another excellent free deal for software on his blog here. It includes SUSE LINUX server as well as SUSE LINUX 9.1 Professional. Just check his blog for the details as I want to give credit where credit is due.

Important Decision Made

Sunday, July 4th, 2004

Since registering HiddenMusic.com, I’ve been trying to decide what platform and language to develop the site with – I even bought a book on ASP .NET. It seems pretty easy to find people commenting on how PHP/MySql isn’t adequate to develop a serious web application, but after finding this out, I have a new found faith in PHP. So while I won’t have a website up and running any time soon, I can at least now pick my webhost for the site and at least get a splash page up and running. I still need a logo so any ideas would be appreciated.
